A Pocket Knife Winner: CRKT Drifter

The CRKT drifter made it to the top of the list regarding pocket knives, due to the perfect blend of high quality, flawless ergonomic handle, incredible portability, and its unique low price which makes it very affordable. To be honest, I have to give credit when credit is due. I would have found this knife if it weren’t for my best mate Kyle from Plasterer Sydney.

Let us take a look at its one of a kind properties.

Ergonomics of the handle

Simplicity always wins. That is the case with the CRKT Drifter knife, where a perfectly simple, standard handle beat up the odds and made it to the best. With absolutely no notches nor finger groves, and basic shape, this simplistic handle works perfectly well with everyone, everywhere and at all times. Besides providing the user with a comfortable grip, its practicality and simplicity aids in lowering its price in the market.

The shape of the blade

With an all-purpose, traditional, and again, simplistic drop-point blade shape, sharpening the edge of the CRKT Drifter makes it an enjoyable experience as opposed to a painful one. Usually, for certain tasks, specific blade shapes will be more convenient than others. However, you can count on the drop-point form of this knife for an all-purpose, general use tool that is convenient for everyone. The blade is made of titanium nitride, which is a high-quality blend of metals that makes it resistant to rust.

Convenient size

The CRKT Drifter can compact itself in such a way that you can easily fit it inside your pocket without even noticing its presence. It has a length of 6.5-inches when open and 3.7-inches when closed and weighs as light as 68 grams. It also contains a tight clip in the box so you can clip the knife to your pocket. Unfortunately, the clip does not vary in size, so the user is stuck with a one size clip at all times. However, its utility far overcomes its lack of flexibility.

Locking option

Some consider the locking option a hazard, and some consider it a safety measure. The CRKT Drifter contains a small, simple yet perfectly safe liner lock that can make the knife adequate for more demanding tasks.

Affordability

Again, simplicity always wins. This knife is under $40.00 in cost, which makes it extremely affordable for a pocket knife. It is an essential, single blade pocket knife that beats the odds in the market regarding perfect price balance and good quality.

Personalization

As if all the unique qualities above were not enough, the CRKT Drifter also brings in uniqueness within its simplicity. Thanks to the flat areas present in the frame or the blade, this knife can be personalized. Either by imprinting on it by silkscreen or laser, you can make it unique. Also, engraving works just as beautifully in all flat areas.

In summary, the unique low price of the CRKT Drifter knife combined with its conveniently small size, long-lasting blade, locking options, ergonomic blade, and personalization opportunities made this knife the top one of the list. The simplicity in the materials, along with the design itself, has made it not just functional, but genuinely unique and practical.

Legalities of Camping Knives

You are touring the United States of America, walking down the streets, enjoying your time. You like fixing things; you find it exciting and stress-releasing, which is why you carry a pocketknife in your bag at all times: you never know when it might become useful. During your visit to the state of Alabama, the person right behind you is carrying a bowie knife attached to their hip. All you can think of is, is that even legal? You move on to your next state on the trip, Oklahoma; you get stopped by the local police, and during their search, they find your knife. Next thing you know, you are being arrested for possession of a weapon and taken to the police station. Vacation is over.

It might turn out as a surprise to you, but actually, every country, estate, province, has specific knife/blade rules to which you must comply.

Knives at The United States of America

Generally speaking, the majority of the United States allows for you to have auto-open knives with a few exceptions. In the Virginia state, it is not allowed to own any knife, whereas, in Michigan and Minnesota, all sorts of knives are entirely legal. In some other locations, such as Montana, it is not allowed to conceal blades that are over 4 inches; however, it is perfectly legal to carry them when not concealed. If you are planning to travel to the United States and you are a knife-lover, make sure you check the regulations to avoid any bad experiences or surprises.

Knives in Australia

Australia also has variation in the law regarding knives; however, they are not as hard to keep track of like the ones in the United States of America. For instance, in general, and with a few exceptions, it is illegal to carry a knife in Australia.

In Western Australia, if you happen to have a lawful excuse to carry a knife, you might get away with it. For example, if you are volunteering at community lunch, and you are one of the cooks, it is acceptable and understandable for you to carry a knife. In other locations such as Queensland, a utility knife such as a Swiss Army one is allowed.

Camping Knives

Depending on the location and the law that applies during your camping trip, you might get away with a small camping knife. Usually, having a blade whose purpose is to assist you during your trip rather than to harm others is not frowned upon. The majority of the United States allows having camping-knives and auto-open knives without any problems, as opposed to Australia, where any type of knives, including camping ones, are prohibited unless you have a reasonable excuse.

As a good recommendation, if you would like to remain on the safe side, it is better to simply not have a knife at all. However, it is doubtful that anyone can go camping without a camping knife to make their life easy. In such cases where a reasonable excuse is there, feel free to carry a camping knife with you. Nonetheless, if you like to have a knife in your bag just for the sake of doing it, it is recommended that you limit yourself to the multipurpose knives such as the Swiss Army to avoid problems.

What Makes a Camping Knife Great

It is summertime, and you have decided to go out with your loved ones for a unique camping trip. It has been months, perhaps years since you have been out camping. That is when you have forgotten something. You have misplaced your old, perfect camping knife. Is it truly possible that a camping knife could be that important? How should you select your new camping knife?

The uses of a camping knife

The first thing to consider is for what you will need the camping knife, to narrow down your options. Looking back, you realize that cooking is close to impossible without it. Moreover, for rafting activities and other games that require a rope to be cut will need only the sharpest of edges. Starting a fire, cutting up wood, setting up the tent, cutting roasting sticks, all of those activities require a particular type of knife that will make your life easy during camping. For example, if you will only use the knife to set up a tent or cut an apple, then a low maintenance one might be enough. On the other hand, if you will be using it for a rescue rope or extreme activities, then a sharp edge and highly resistant camping knife is a must. Once you have determined what you need the camping knife for, you can proceed to select one according to their specific properties.

The proper length

As opposed to a kitchen knife where sometimes the more prolonged the blade, the better, when camping, you would want to keep your knife between four and five inches in length; this way, your work will be performed in a precise, safe manner.

The perfect weight

Picture yourself on an extreme hike during that camping trip you are about to take. You are hiking an incredibly steep hill, and you feel a heavyweight weighing you down on your pockets. You decidhe to check what it is, and you find the camping knife you purchased only a week ago. Definitely not the best choice. On the other hand, a camping knife that is as light as a single hair will only make you lose the stability of the knife itself. A good camping knife needs to weigh a bit over 100 grams without the handle weight. That would make the weight of your knife perfect.

The material and type of blade

You can choose between high carbon steel and stainless steel knives. Although high carbon steel has increased resistance to corrosion, which will save you quite a significant amount of time due to their low maintenance requirements; stainless steel knives have a sharp edge that will hold for a prolonged period. It is also recommended to get a locking blade type of knife, where the folding mechanism will let you to combine the convenience of a stable fixed blade with the security of a safely folded pocket knife.

Handles and their styles

Aside from ensuring that the perfect blade is chosen, an ideal handle is also a must. Having an excellent grip will help you and provide you with the control and support you need when handling a knife. One of the best choices for handles is the rubber handle. On top of being water-resistant, they also possess a good grip. Unfortunately, they might not be as durable as stainless steel handles, but they are still a great choice.

In summary, once you have figured out what you will use the knife for, choosing its properties will help you have the best experience with the camping knife. The length, weight, material, and type of blade/handle you pick will define the sharpness, precision, and durability of your knife. When the right one is chosen, you can make the best use out of it.
